Carolyn Jones - A Demonstration on Light & Color

Thursday, March 8  1:00 - 3:00 PM

Room D, Senior Wing

Carolyn is an accomplished artist. In her career as a Silicon Valley research scientist,

she worked mostly with solid-state devices that emitted or detected light. For the last 20 years, she specialized in "colorimetry", the science of color mixing with light. These insights on how optical colors work and play off one another apply directly to artistic expression. She has recently discovered that optical color mixing effects can be achieved using transparent oil colors.

Carolyn’s demonstration will include:

• color mixing with paint

• color mixing with light (also called optical color mixing) This is very different from mixing colors with paint.

• achieving optical color mixing effects using paint. (She considers this almost weird and counter-intuitive.)

This should be a very interesting and "enlightening" demonstration. The oil painting“Mountain Meadow” is an example of optical color mixing effects. This painting was done in transparent oil color using red, green and blue – NO YELLOW.

Kathleen Alexander - Watercolor Demonstration

Monday, May 14  7:00 - 9:00 PM

Conference Room

I began painting in watercolor in 1983. I took my first drawing and painting class at San Francisco State University to fulfill a graduation requirement, and found that I was more interested in my art class than in my major. I kept painting, but didn’t take another art class until 1991. I studied watercolor with photo-realist painter Jim Torlakson in the early 1990’s, and with his encouragement, I began to paint seriously. In 1999, I was awarded a one year scholarship to the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. I attended the AAC in 2000-2001, and fulfilled my dream of attending art school.

I paint from photos I’ve taken while in Hawaii and in California. Sometimes I combine many photos to create my composition. Lately, the focus of my painting as been tropical flowers and still life. I try to capture the grace and beauty of my subjects and hope viewers of my paintings can share in the happiness they bring me. My goal is to make my paintings look alive.

Room D, Senior Wing

Diana will be giving a critique of members' paintings.  Please bring 2-3 paintings for some great constructive feedback.

A little about Diana:  Plein air oil paintings are her frequent subject and all landscapes are done on location - in California from Morro Bay to Bishop to Mendocino. Many are familiar local scenes in Menlo Park, Palo Alto and the Bay Area. Other sites have been in Idaho, the San Juan Islands, New Mexico, Colorado and France.

Studies have been with notable artists including Ted Goerschner, Edward Norton Ward, Joyce Pike, Kevin Macpherson, Duane Wakeham, T.M. Nicholas, Bob Gerbracht and Charles Movali. She is active with the Menlo Art League, a Signature member and Treasurer of the Society of Western Artists and their Board of Trustees.

She is active with the Peninsula Outdoor Painters, a plein air painting group that paints every Tuesday on the S.F. Peninsula. They have a web site of their painting schedule and the paintings done each week by the artists.
